Portrait of Ikuko's Ghost

March 2009

Hi everyone. It's been some time since I last uploaded some work.
I've been working on this of and on for a few months.
It actually started as a very different piece. It initially was a girl with Geisha make-up and japanese style tattoo sleeves, holding an electric guitar. It was kind of a modern day reference to the japanese goddess Benzaiten.
After some time I felt unhappy with it. I really didn't like where it was going, but I didn't want to discard it because there were several elements I did like.
I had this idea of going for a really dark and haunting theme. I've always been fascinated by japanese horror movies and ghost stories. It's the only genre that actually scares me and keeps me awake for hours at night. So I tried to implement this into my painting.
I wanted her face to be the main focus. I kept it really white to emphasise this. Also to suggest she's wearing Geisha make-up.
The blood is there to tell the story as to why she died and what drives her to haunt. It's up to the viewer to make up their stories.
The blood is also there for contrast purposes. A bit of colour in an overall dark and monochrome piece.

I hope you'll enjoy it and that I didn't bore you to much
